About Me

I'm a writer, teacher, and musician. I have worked in academia as a musicologist in the US, UK, and Canada since 2015, and currently teach courses at the University of Toronto on opera, gender, sexuality, and contemporary performance. After I completed my PhD at Columbia in 2020, I taught at universities in the UK and Canada and maintain an active multifaceted career in the arts and education. Born in London, over the years, I've crisscrossed two continents a few times, but I am now happy to call Toronto my home!

My writing and my practice as an educator focuses on amplifying historically marginalized voices. With a specialism in contemporary opera, my academic publications have explored topics such as feminist interpretations of myth and allegory in contemporary opera; queer opera; opera and film; digital opera and politics; activism and opera, and intercultural and multilingual opera in Europe. As a freelance writer, I write reviews, op-eds, profiles, and essays for North American companies including Boston Lyric Opera and the Canadian Opera Company. As a performer, I am active in the Toronto choral scene, currently a professional alto lead at St. James Cathedral; elsewhere, you can find me singing in various concerts, normally of very groovy Renaissance polyphony! I am a clarinettist and saxophonist, and a keen amateur pianist and bass guitarist, and an organist just for fun.

When not writing, teaching, or singing, you can find me swimming (open water all year round!), knitting, reading endlessly, cooking, boxing, playing beach volleyball, watching baseball, at the movies, cycling, photographing, playing Pathfinder with pals, or, above all, napping with my cat, Floria Tosca.
